From the Greek word patàne (plate), a Paten is the small round plate usually made of silver or gold, where the host is placed to be consecrated during the Eucharistic celebration. It generally holds the host intended for the communion of the celebrant. There are also larger patens, concave shaped, that are generally used during the liturgy and contain the hosts also intended for the faithful. (GIRM no.331)
